Dear Friends and Business Partners,
Recently I was privileged to meet Team Clarke, a dog sled team based in Colorado that is preparing for their 9th Iditarod. The Iditarod is a 1000 mile dog sled race from Anchorage, Alaska to Nome, Alaska and is called “The Last Great Race on Earth”. Training with the team and their enthusiastic pack of race dogs is a thrilling combination of speed, teamwork and the special relationship between man and dog.
Team Clarke is comprised of seasoned dog sled racers, but, I was most moved by their most recent recruit, Chris Dale. Chris is a former Marine and served as a member of Darkhorse, 3rd Battalion 5th Marines.
In the fall of 2010, Chris and the Marines of the 3/5 were deployed to Sangin, Afghanistan, located in the southern Helmand province. When the 3/5 arrived, the Taliban was fully entrenched, putting the Marines at an instant disadvantage. Within the first three weeks of fighting, there were sixty-two causalities, forcing the officers to debate a retreat. But the Marines of the 3/5 were resolute and pressed on for six months fighting in what is now considered to be the bloodiest battleground in Afghanistan.
Having experienced the worst of war, Chris’s return state-side and road to healing has been difficult. A chance meeting connected Chris to Team Clarke who embraced him and the role they could play in his recovery. Working in Colorado’s beautiful nature with man’s best friend has brought Chris rapid and beneficial healing. Inspired by Chris, Team Clarke is running this year’s Iditarod in honor of the fallen soldiers of Darkhorse 3/5.
Moved by this story of bravery, service, sacrifice and generosity, I couldn’t help but be inspired. I knew our team would want to support this great effort. Chris Dale’s service to our Country, his ongoing rehabilitation as part of Team Clarke, and the dog’s enthusiasm and competitive spirit perfectly resonates with Flying Star’s core values.
In celebration of Team Clarke and our Company’s continued progress, Flying Star Transport is serving as Team Clarke’s principal sponsor. We invite you to join us as we cheer on Team Clarke in their quest for victory and their quest to honor Chris Dale and Darkhorse 3/5. We’ll update you during the race on Team Clarke’s progress and hope you enjoy this adventure.
Many thanks for your continued business and friendship,
Chan Davidson
